Apparently Mr. Chatham took no action in the matter
-
until 28th. October, 1908, two years and two months after the
roof drawings had been sent in by the Architects when he dia-
-cussed the atter with Mr. Denison and Mr. Chatham then requested
Mr. Denison to submit an amended design for supporting the roof.
On 12th. November, 1908, the Architects sent in an
unnumbered drawing (dated 12th. November, 1908) being a plan of
the roof.
This plan of 12th. November, 1908, differs very little
in external appearance from the original contract drawing llo. 6,
with the exception that provision is made for the Clock Tower coming through the main north ridge, but the construction of the roof had been, on Mr. Chatham's suggestion, entirely changed, as
steel purling were substituted for wood purling, and the number of trusses (or principals) was reduced very considerably. This render- -ed the drawings 43, 44 and 44-A of 30th. August, 1906, useless.
On the 16th. November, 1908, Mr. Chatham acknowledged
this plan; and the steel joista were ordered from England.
On 27th. November, 1908, the Architects sent in detailed drawings of roof trusses to suit the new design of 12th. November,
1908.
On 2nd. December, 1908, Mr. Gale criticised these details and pointed out some obvious defects in construction.
On 9th. December, 1908, Mr. Fisher conferred with Mr.
Denison with regard to these defects.
On 28th. January, 1909, Mr. Chatham sent details of trusses designed by Messrs. Gale and Fisher to the Architects for approval.
On 19th. February, 1909, the Architects approved of
these subject to slight alterations.
On 26th. February, 1909, the Architects returned the detail drawings of 27th. November, 1908, corrected with dimensions.
On 3rd. April, 1909, Mr. Fisher pointed out to the Architects that the dimensions were inaccurate.
In the meantime trusses were constructed by the Dock
